Making a game in a week

We thought it would be fun to share the creation process of this game in a week.

For us the first weekend we were physically together for another commitment which helped a lot with the brainstorming process. We also were together on Saturday October 1, when we also worked longer (6 hours) and made a lot of progress and tied all the mechanics together (and even scrapped a few).

The rest of the week we worked alone or from Discord calls. We averaged about 1-2 hours a day on average on these days.

  • Sep 23-25: Brainstorming ideas over the weekend
  • Sep 26: Create simple tile, player and physics framework.
  • Sep 27: Add multiple characters and energy logic (a character has limited energy for movement).
  • Sep 28: Implement merging/absorption on Absorboys and camera pan effect.
  • Sep 29: Add multiple level support. Clean code and fix bugs.
  • Sep 30: Add new sprites and add animations.
  • Oct 01: Remove energy (not needed for fun gameplay). Add crouch sprites. Implement crates, Absorboy's powers (crouch, jump, teleport, push) and mess around with physics engine. Add music and sound effects. Design multiple (tutorial) levels (1-6).
  • Oct 02: Final touches to physics, levels and camera workings. Design level 7 and 8.
